Objective:To determine if a treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) was effective in treating patients with the erectile dysfunction associated with Parkinson’s disease and other chronic conditions.
Design:A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of tadalafil (Cialis®) versus sildenafil (Viagra®) in patients with ED.
Setting:The UK General Practice Research Database.
Participants:Patients with ED and Parkinson’s disease who were treated with sildenafil (Viagra®) or tadalafil (Cialis®) for 6 months.
Main outcome measures:Diagnosis of ED, including erectile dysfunction, by the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and the Erectile Function Questionnaire (EFQ).
Results:Of the 4,849 patients who were treated with tadalafil and sildenafil for 6 months, there were 17 men and 4 women with ED. The mean age of the study population was 59 (SD, 17.8 years) and the mean IEF score was 17.9 (SD, 10.1). The IIEF-EF and EFQ scores were higher in ED patients compared with patients with Parkinson’s disease. The most common ED diagnoses in both groups were erectile dysfunction (n = 1,942; 77.2%) and Parkinson’s disease (n = 1,882; 85.4%). The IIEF-Q scores were higher in patients with ED compared with Parkinson’s disease.
Conclusions:Tadalafil was an effective treatment for ED in patients with Parkinson’s disease and ED in Parkinson’s disease patients, although its use was associated with an increased risk of side effects.

1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).
2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.
3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are the key drug-food interactions to be aware of:
To ensure the best treatment outcomes, it is important that:
Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, so consuming them while also consuming them as a whole can be dangerous.
This is the topic of another post about Viagra vs. Sildenafil citrate - a comparison between two drugs that use different mechanisms. The following is a comparison between these drugs:
Viagra, the most popular generic drug used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), is used for the treatment of ED. It is a PDE5 inhibitor, which allows the body to make more of the enzyme that is responsible for the erection.
Sildenafil citrate, on the other hand, is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, which helps to relax the blood vessels and allows more blood to flow into the penis when you are sexually stimulated. This allows more blood to enter the penis and help you get an erection.
The reason why Viagra is used for ED is because it works in the same way that Sildenafil citrate does, which is to allow more blood to flow in the penis when you are sexually stimulated.
Sildenafil is only available with a prescription from a doctor. It is also available as an over-the-counter drug, like the generic Viagra.
Sildenafil and Viagra share common side effects. Sildenafil may cause you to feel dizzy, light-headed, or fainting. This may also increase the risk of low blood pressure and heart problems. The effects of Viagra on the cardiovascular system can also be enhanced by taking Viagra with a nitrate drug. This is the main reason why Viagra is used for ED.
However, Viagra is used for other uses. It is not FDA-approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, which is why it is sometimes called "the pill of choice."
Side effects of the two drugs are the most common and include:
Viagra helps to increase the blood flow in the penis. This is called "erection," and it works by relaxing the muscles in the penis. This allows more blood to flow into the penis and make it easier to get an erection.
Viagra and Sildenafil are very similar, and Viagra is only available with a prescription. The other drugs used for ED work similarly, but have similar side effects. Viagra can help you to get an erection if you take it with nitrates, which are often used to treat chest pain, but it does not affect the heart.
The way Viagra works is to increase the blood flow in the penis, and Sildenafil helps to improve the blood flow.
Sildenafil is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and is often the first drug for this purpose. It is often used to treat ED. However, it does not work for everyone.
The way Viagra works is to make more blood flow into the penis. It is used to treat PAH. Viagra works similarly to Sildenafil, but the way Viagra is used for ED is to make more blood flow into the penis.
Viagra and Sildenafil are not the same drug. Viagra is only available with a prescription, whereas Sildenafil is available only with a prescription. Side effects of Viagra are similar to those of Sildenafil, but some of the side effects of Sildenafil can be milder and more severe than Viagra.
Side effects of Sildenafil include:
Side effects of Viagra are similar to those of Sildenafil. However, Viagra is only available with a prescription, whereas Sildenafil is available only with a prescription.
